refinement of image, due late summer, is needed to restore balance

show detail of 'jin' (debarked branch) and 'Shari' (debarked trunk
often associated with 'Jin') & both brought about in nature by
gales, lightning, disease & frost (bottom right). Detail

Ginkgo biloba or Maidenhair tree (summer 2009)
Probably one of our oldest specimen bonsai. We conservatively estimate the tree to be 70 - 80 years old, however the unusual trunk protrusions only occur on very old Ginkgos which suggests this one could be over 100 years old. Rugged bark & small fan-shaped foliage.
|
English Oak (Quercus robur) A majestic species indigenous to Britain. Estimated age 50-70 years Many specimens still surviving since middle ages This 'yamadori' (Japanese term for a bonsai collected from the wild) has been in bonsai cultivation for some 25 years. All the main structure has been formed by extensive wire training over the past decade. |
Hillier Elm (BIG "S") ULMUS 'Jacqueline Hillier' (Computerised prediction) A rare dwarf variety of Elm, popular for bonsai. It was discovered in a garden in Birmingham in the 60s by the Hillier family. This giant of a tree was field grown at Glenbrook. Geoff has removed the heavy old apex this past winter in favour of a much lighter forward-facing branch - which will require another season or two to restore the crown of the bonsai.

KATSURA 'Cercidiphylum japonicum' A brilliant japanese species. This one was-over 4 feet high sold in 2006. We have one with superb surface rootage in a large mica pot. It needs a few more years to reach above standard. Some stocky field-grown katsuras still available. |

Chinese Juniper - windswept story |

Geoff was inspired by the Clevedon seaside leaning Yew, below, shaped by the prevailing winds, & seen in seaside photos since victorian times. Can you see the giant label here.

Geoff's interpretation using a Blaauws juniper is seen below in the design process in 2000 on one of his many past demonstrations. |

The bonsai as it is today is twice it's size of 10 years ago and is currently viewed with a 180 degree orientation! The photograph below was taken in 2008 after extensive restyling, and last years growth has enhanced the overall appearance This much discussed and admired 'show' bonsai is now reluctantly included in the spring sale pending Ros & Geoff's retirement
